Summer Dress Trends for 2020 and Beyond

Like most people around the world, you probably missed your time under the sun this year. It is perfectly understandable if you want to get a jump on next year’s edition, and a good place to start is with the summer dresses in your closet.

Summer dress trends come and go, in tune with the ebbs and flows of the rest of the fashion world. If you don’t feel like recycling last year’s wardrobe, it is never too early to restock your closet. Here’s what you should look for online and in retail stores to keep up with the latest summer trends.

Baby Doll Dresses

Baby doll dresses are still in, and you can expect to see them being worn next year. Wearing mini dresses like the baby doll style is an excellent way to stay fresh and look amazing while you are at it. Pick an ensemble with pastel summer hues that feel light and breezy. You can also go with a denim babydoll dress with blousy sleeves, which is a better alternative to wearing jeans. You can wear baby doll dresses for gatherings, weekend brunch with friends, or even on a date.

Linen Summer Dresses

With its ability to combat the sweltering heat, linen has long been a staple for summer dresses. However, retailers continue to find ways to update it with more variations or mixing it with other materials. For next year’s summer, find linen versions of your favourite styles to stay cool under the sun.

Sheer Layers

Sheer fabrics are great for the summer heat. If you are feeling adventurous, you can go all out with a sheer summer dress that would surely send heads turning and hearts racing. It is a great way to take advantage of the sunshine and play with silhouettes. If this is too much for you, you can layer sheer clothing over a vest or a dress.

Torso Ruching

Ruching no longer belongs exclusively to necks and wrists. Come next summer, it will be over torsos as well. Ruching draws the eye towards the narrowest part of the body, which makes any attire flattering. It could also be used to conceal not-so-flattering parts under the gather of fabric.

Aside from being complementary to the figure, ruching is a great way to add texture and character to an otherwise plain dress. It can immediately make any ensemble look more sophisticated and high-end.

Summer Dresses With Puffed Sleeves

Last year saw a slight resurrection of the ‘80s-inspired puffed sleeves. It is gaining more traction this year and is expected to continue until next year’s summer. Puffed sleeves offer a design that can transform tops from simple to extraordinary.

Puffed sleeves hit the runway this year and made a big splash. It is expected to still be on the streets, being worn by regular consumers next year. You can choose a summer dress with the swell focused on the shoulders and gradually receding down the arms. A white top with puffed sleeves would also go well with a bottom accented by a wrap-around.

Power Prints

Another fashion trend making a huge comeback this year is the power print. Giant floral patterns, oversized polka dots, and starkly contrasting hues were received with open arms in many runways this year. Things would be no different come next year’s summer as this bold fashion trend is expected to stay relevant.
